Biography
Mediya Al Matroshy, an Emirati contemporary artist born in London, and she paints music. As a person with synesthesia, with the blending of multiple senses, she hears the sound of colors and sees the notes of music. In her abstract works, Mediya goes beyond inspiration, capturing rhythms and notes on the canvas. Her deep and spiritual connection to music translates melodies into colors, shapes, textures, and energy, expressed through dynamic brushstrokes. “Whether it's going on a long car ride and listening to the radio or a song a friend will send to me, a song will come through that will feel almost channeled & just right to paint that day and so I play the song on loop on my speakers as I paint it,” she describes. The melody of the songs that Mediya listens to is translated into colors, shapes, and textures and the energy that music evokes becomes brushstrokes on the canvas. "Each art piece is a song and that is exactly how they are titled,” Mediya explains.
