Born in Colorado in 1958, Francesca Woodman was an American photographer, remembered principally for her long-exposure, often unsettling black and white photographs which explored notions of the female self. Her work featured either herself or other female models. Woodman attended the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design, as well as the school's honors program in Rome, Italy between 1977 and 1978.
The artist died in 1981 by suicide, at the age of 22. Her work has been posthumously honored through a variety of art publications and exhibitions, both in the States and on a global scale. Today, her work remains on exhibition at the Tate Gallery's Artist Rooms, the National Gallery of Scotland.
