Orange Backstage, 2021

Manuel Santelices   Emerging artists

Ink pen, gouache, and watercolor. Movies, TV. and magazines are constant source of inspiration. Fame, as flickering and shallow it can be sometimes, is very intriguing to me.

This artwork is a compelling exploration of human expression, set against a vivid orange backdrop. The composition features three figures, each exuding a distinct presence and demeanor. The central figure, adorned in a simple white tank top, gazes directly at the viewer with an intense, contemplative expression. This individual is marked by tousled blond hair, adding a touch of casual nonchalance. To the right, another figure is depicted in profile, characterized by longer, flowing blond hair. This figure wears a dark attire, creating a stark contrast against the bright background. A notable accessory, a white band around the head, adds an element of intrigue and modernity to the character. The leftmost figure, turned away from the others, is clad in darker clothing and sports a similar headband. This adds a sense of cohesion and mystery to the trio, inviting speculation about their connected narrative. The bold use of orange as the dominant color imbues the scene with energy and boldness, while the white and black elements of the figures’ clothing create a dynamic visual balance. The artist uses expressive brushstrokes and a minimalist approach to detail, emphasizing emotion and personality over realism. The initials "MS" at the bottom right suggest authorship, infusing the work with an additional layer of personalization and authenticity. Overall, this painting captures a moment of introspection and connection, drawing the viewer into its enigmatic world.
