“Mirrored Souls" is a contemporary figurative acrylic painting on canvas by French artist Natalya Mougenot, measuring 80 × 80 × 3.5 cm (31.5 × 31.5 × 1.4 in), and part of her ongoing exploration of women, emotional connection and human bonds.
Since 2022, Natalya has returned repeatedly to the theme of the bond between women — between sisters, friends, mothers and daughters, but also between women who simply recognise something of themselves in one another.
For Natalya, this theme goes far beyond depicting women together. It is an exploration of what holds us together emotionally: trust, tenderness, solidarity, vulnerability, empathy and the quiet certainty that someone will be there when we need them. In a world that can often feel increasingly fast, individualistic and disconnected, she is interested in celebrating relationships that offer genuine presence and emotional support. This search for connection is deeply connected to her own exploration of identity as a woman and as an artist.
What makes this theme particularly important in Natalya's practice is that she does not attempt to define femininity through conventional portraiture. Her women are deliberately not portraits. By reducing or eliminating individual facial features, she moves away from physical identity and toward emotional identity. The women become vessels for feelings and shared experiences, allowing the viewer to recognise their own relationships and memories within them.
This is also where Natalya's distinctive visual language becomes essential. Her style exists between figuration and abstraction: the human form remains recognisable, but it is simplified, distorted and liberated from anatomical precision. She relies on expressive contours, spontaneous gestures, visible brushwork and powerful colour relationships to communicate what words cannot easily express. Rather than describing an emotion literally, she allows colour, movement and form to carry the emotion.
Her process is instinctive and physical. Working predominantly with acrylics, oils and oil sticks, she embraces spontaneity and allows the act of painting itself to remain visible on the canvas.
The result is a language that feels both raw and contemporary — emotionally direct, but open enough for each viewer to bring their own story to the work.
“Mirrored Souls" may particularly resonate with collectors who value art with an emotional narrative rather than purely decorative appeal. It speaks to women who recognise the importance of friendship, sisterhood and mutual support, to collectors drawn to contemporary figurative art with an abstract sensibility, and to anyone who has experienced a relationship in which another person feels like a reflection of something deep within themselves.
Ultimately, Natalya is not asking the viewer simply to look at two women. She is asking them to remember someone who has been there for them — someone with whom they share an unspoken understanding, a shared history, or a part of themselves.
That is the essence of Mirrored Souls: the idea that sometimes another soul becomes a mirror, allowing us to recognize ourselves more clearly.
Natalya is a contemporary french artist living in Lyon.
She was born and grew up in Kazakhstan, the country known for its spacious steppes.
She arrived in France 2003. Since that moment she loves her adoptive country.
She started painting in 2017 and used it as a therapeutic and emotional release during times of crisis. She incorporates this therapeutic approach in her artistic creative process till now.
In her artistic practice she refers to the terms of metamodernism, which proposes to look at the world from the position of the inner adult.
As an artist and as a woman she translates the experience of her personal search for balance based on harmony between mind, soul and body. This balance, in her opinion, is the pillar for the inner adult.
Important components of her work are authenticity, soulfulness, sincerity, emotionality and honesty. She immerses the objects and the characters in the world where there is no falsity, rudeness, loneliness and indifference.
She works rapidly and is constantly sensitive to the details.
Her artistic process is a fine balance between a pre-meditation and spontantainty which helps her to create her expressive atmospheric artworks with a modern touch of impressionism by cultivating a naive art approach.
