Description
Mixed media on Hanji Korean traditional paper
A powerful vision of feminine authority emerges through a blend of biological precision and fantastic imagination. This artwork reimagines the concept of leadership through a symbolic, insectoid lens. A central figure stands with an imposing presence. Broad, iridescent wings unfold in warm tones of ochre and crimson. These structures are not merely decorative. They are teeming with small black insects that suggest a hive mind or a collective strength.
The composition balances organic fragility with a commanding scale. A large moth crowns the figure, adding a layer of mystical symmetry. Below, a solitary beetle anchors the scene, grounding the ethereal quality of the drawing. The artist employs fine lines and delicate washes on paper to create a tension between the delicate and the dominant.
This piece explores the evolution of power. It moves beyond traditional royal lineage to celebrate an innate, fierce authenticity. The fusion of human and animal forms transforms the subject into a universal symbol of influence. Every detail, from the rhythmic placement of the insects to the soft gradients of the wings, reinforces a narrative of wisdom and command. The artwork concludes with a precise focus on the contrast between the dark silhouettes and the luminous background.
Presentation
Born in Korea and immersed in French artistic and intellectual culture for more than two decades, Kim Soo Young has developed a distinctive artistic practice that moves between contemporary art and fashion. Her work reflects a dialogue between Korean heritage and French culture, combining traditional craftsmanship, material exploration, and a refined sensitivity to form, nature, and the human experience.
Soo Young holds a Ph.D. in Art Philosophy from Université Paris 8. Her practice is informed by an ongoing exploration of aesthetics, identity, femininity, and the relationship between humans and the natural world. Through images of plants, insects, the human figure, and symbolic objects, she creates a visual language in which beauty, transformation, fragility, and resilience coexist. Nature occupies an important place in her work. Plants and insects are not simply decorative elements, but become symbolic forms through which she reflects on life, transformation, survival, and the intricate connections between the human and natural worlds. Her recent Queen series extends these explorations into the realm of feminine power. Drawing connections between historical queens and contemporary women who have shaped their fields, Soo Young reimagines the Queen not as a figure defined by inherited authority, but as a symbol of vision, courage, achievement, and self-determination. Moving between nature and culture, femininity and history, craftsmanship and contemporary expression, KIM Soo Young continues to create works that invite viewers to reconsider beauty, identity, and the forces that shape our understanding of the world.
