Description
Mixed media on wood panel
A striking synthesis of nature and authority. This artwork presents a hybrid figure that blends human anatomy with the imposing silhouette of a moth. The central entity stands tall on a warm, textured background. Deep purple tones dominate the form, creating a powerful contrast against the golden hues of the paper.
The composition pulses with symbolic energy. A swarm of small black insects encircles the figure, suggesting a hive mind or a loyal court. This imagery evokes the concept of a queen who commands her environment through innate strength. The wings expand with intricate patterns, merging organic biology with a regal presence.
The artist draws from a deep understanding of female power. Here, leadership is reimagined as a force of authenticity and determination. The figure does not rely on traditional crowns but on a fierce, otherworldly identity. Every line reflects a dialogue between historical influence and modern independence.
Fine art drawing techniques bring a raw, tactile quality to the piece. The juxtaposition of the delicate wings and the sharp, rhythmic repetition of the ants creates a compelling tension. This visual narrative explores the evolution of excellence and the commanding nature of the feminine spirit.
Presentation
Born in Korea and immersed in French artistic and intellectual culture for more than two decades, Kim Soo Young has developed a distinctive artistic practice that moves between contemporary art and fashion. Her work reflects a dialogue between Korean heritage and French culture, combining traditional craftsmanship, material exploration, and a refined sensitivity to form, nature, and the human experience.
Soo Young holds a Ph.D. in Art Philosophy from Université Paris 8. Her practice is informed by an ongoing exploration of aesthetics, identity, femininity, and the relationship between humans and the natural world. Through images of plants, insects, the human figure, and symbolic objects, she creates a visual language in which beauty, transformation, fragility, and resilience coexist. Nature occupies an important place in her work. Plants and insects are not simply decorative elements, but become symbolic forms through which she reflects on life, transformation, survival, and the intricate connections between the human and natural worlds. Her recent Queen series extends these explorations into the realm of feminine power. Drawing connections between historical queens and contemporary women who have shaped their fields, Soo Young reimagines the Queen not as a figure defined by inherited authority, but as a symbol of vision, courage, achievement, and self-determination. Moving between nature and culture, femininity and history, craftsmanship and contemporary expression, KIM Soo Young continues to create works that invite viewers to reconsider beauty, identity, and the forces that shape our understanding of the world.
