Description
This acrylic composition unfolds like a dreamlike map. The artist sketches a dense and labyrinthine architecture. The volumes pile up without apparent logic. Shades of gray and blue dominate the scene.
The gaze circulates between geometric shapes and hatched lines. Touches of deep red frame this urban mass. The contrast emphasizes the isolation of the structures.
Certain details attract attention. Polka dot patterns and stripes punctuate the facades. An animal silhouette seems to integrate into the building on the right. The line is precise. The superposition of planes creates an ambiguous depth.
The whole evokes an imaginary city. The reflection is on social organization and human interactions. The drawing plays with perspective to disorient the viewer.
The technique mixes flat areas and transparency. Some yellow flashes illuminate the base of the composition. This work dates from 2016.
Presentation
Bashir Qonqar is a Palestinian artist whose work explores human behaviour, social relationships, cultural conventions, and the psychological effects of personal and collective experience. Working with painting, drawing, digital art, mixed media, and installation, he combines figurative imagery with irony and dark humour to examine the contradictions of contemporary life. His practice uses satire as a way of questioning social norms and reflecting on the complexities of human behaviour.
Born in Beit Jala in 1980, Qonqar studied social sciences in Germany before returning to Bethlehem in 2007. Alongside his artistic practice, he has worked in social rehabilitation, public relations, and art education, including teaching at Dar Al-Kalima University. His work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions in Palestine, Europe, South Africa, the United States, and more, including projects at Al Ma’mal Foundation for Contemporary Art and Al-Sakakini Cultural Centre. Qonqar currently lives and works in Austria.
