MOCS contemporary figurative self-portrait mixed media on canvas: identity under constant friction
From the first encounter, the work feels like a presence that both unsettles and stays with you. There is no intention to please or to close an image; what emerges is an open mental state, charged with noise and contained energy. In Self-Portrait, MOCS shifts the classical idea of portraiture toward a direct emotional experience. Contemporary figurative painting and mixed media on canvas operate here as a space of internal confrontation, where gesture, color, and fragmentation activate a sensory reading rather than a descriptive one.
Mixed media on canvas: sustained tension
The pictorial surface is built through insistence. The gray background functions as an eroded mental space, almost neutral, while black strokes advance without correction, marking rhythm and rupture. Yellows and oranges concentrate friction and energy, while blues and greens introduce pauses of fatigue and introspection. This contemporary painting is constructed through chromatic imbalance, characteristic of expressive figuration and direct gestural painting, where each color responds to a specific emotional state.
Contemporary figuration: conscious deformation
The face is not presented as a recognizable identity, but as a trace in formation. The figure appears fragmented, displaced, intervened by symbols, crosses, and numbers that do not explain but insist. This work remains as a mental image that never fully resolves. Contemporary figuration here does not seek resemblance, but confrontation: looking inward, accepting deformation and contradiction as part of the process of becoming, within an expressionist painting that lingers beyond the first glance.
MOCS mixed media: authorial signature
MOCS's pictorial signature is recognized in the impulsive black line, the layering of surfaces, and the use of error as visual structure. The work subtly dialogues with the visual energy of Jean-Michel Basquiat, through gestural intensity and the fragmented psychology of the face. Born in Cuernavaca, Morelos, and trained at the Botticelli Institute in fine arts and restoration, the artist consolidates a coherent and honest practice. Created in mixed media on canvas, measuring 70 × 70 cm in 2025, this piece is an original artwork, a unique piece, and a signed work that integrates materiality, emotion, and thought on the same plane.
Presentation
Born in Cuernavaca, Morelos, and a graduate of the Botticelli Institute for Art and Restoration with a degree in Fine Arts, his interest in art began through a fascination with comics, films, and rock music. The catharsis of expressing disruptive emotions led him to find in art an ideal channel of expression. His work is the result of a journey through intangible emotions, guided by the need to communicate feelings and anxieties rooted in universal themes. He understands the act of creation as a raw and spontaneous experience, strongly influenced by movements such as Art Brut, Abstract Expressionism, Neo-Expressionism, and by artists including Jean Dubuffet, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Rufino Tamayo. Elements such as color, gesture, line, point, figure, and texture function as tools to construct a deeply personal aesthetic experience, inviting the viewer to accompany him on this journey and to connect with their own emotions and inner concerns.
