Architectural Photography

Buildings. The long-lasting cultural symbols that not only shelter those who populate the urban landscape but are also works of art designed by architects. It is hardly surprising, then, that subsequently they attract the lens of the photographer. What is fortunate is that the timeline of such buildings can be monitored due to the allure of capturing the image of a building. Despite the photographer merely initially meaning to just document them. Today, such archives reveal how the urban landscape has changed and indeed how our relationship has changed with it. Thus, photographing architecture has become an art form in and of itself, providing a diverse subject for the artist and an opportunity to highlight architecture's importance. In Artsper's own selection of works, the artist Thomas Jorion refers to architecture as the subject as “timeless islands." It is true; palaces, villas, castles, casinos and hotels hold stories, memories and reflect a change in the socio-political context of the city they're built in. In fact, Jorion strives to focus on the relationship with the built environment and focuses on the abandoned spaces. And he isn't the only one - delve into the works and abandoned spaces captured by Christian Bruneau. With photographing architecture comes urban exploration.
