Description
With Genesis (2024), Ukrainian artist Zakhar Shevchuk offers a contemplative exploration of life’s origins. The painting revolves around a single form: the egg, universally recognized as a symbol of birth, transformation, and potential. Rendered in oil with translucent layers of blue and white, the oval glows softly, appearing both fragile and enduring.
What makes Genesis compelling is its ability to communicate on multiple levels at once. On the most immediate level, it is a serene composition, minimal in execution, with balanced tones and a soothing presence. Yet behind this quietness lies a wealth of associations. In myths, philosophies, and spiritual traditions, the egg has carried the weight of creation stories – from the cosmic egg of ancient cultures to the intimate reality of new life. Shevchuk condenses this collective symbolism into a single image, transforming a simple shape into a site of meditation.
The palette enhances the work’s atmosphere. The whites suggest purity and openness, while the blues carry associations with depth, introspection, and infinity. Together, they create a dual sense of enclosure and expansion, echoing the paradox of beginnings: to be both contained and boundless.
Rather than presenting a literal narrative, Genesis opens a contemplative space where viewers can project their own associations. For collectors, this painting is an invitation to pause and reflect, offering not only aesthetic beauty but also philosophical resonance.
Presentation
“I try to simplify the form to the point when it feels that nothing else shall be removed and only the essential elements remain. I transfer my impressions and self-reflections about objects into my paintings. I express what I feel rather than how I see, often arriving somewhere between figurative and abstract art." Zakhar Shevchuk
Zakhar Shevchuk is a young professional painter and draftsman, he holds a master in arts degree from the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture (Kyiv, Ukraine) and now himself teaches at the academy. His artworks are held in public and private collections worldwide, furthermore, he often participates in various public projects, such as painting murals and other monumental installations.
With years Zakhar's artistic style moved away from academic realism (which always tended closer to expressionism) and towards the style that in somewhere on the edge between figurative art and abstraction. In many of his works, even those that may seem as fully abstract ones, you will find some elements that were intentionally added, aiming to trick your brain into believing that you have finally found something recognisable, something that matches the reality, but then you suddenly loose it, starting the search over and over again.
