Description
This painting of Quimper Cathedral is a captivating work where architectural realism meets a surrealist interpretation of colors. The main facade of the cathedral, with its imposing twin towers and richly decorated central portal, stands majestically, bathed in cream stone light. The large rose window above the portal, even without its distinct colored stained glass windows, is suggested by delicate shades of blue, adding a mystical depth to the whole. In front of the cathedral, rue de Quimper, lined with half-timbered houses, creates a picturesque and typically Breton scene. The half-timbered facades and slate roofs of the houses blend harmoniously into the shades of blue, reinforcing the surrealist atmosphere of the painting.
The cobblestones of the street, identical to the colors of the cathedral, add tangible texture to the scene. The bold use of shades of blue infuses the composition with a dreamlike atmosphere, where the cathedral almost seems to float above everyday life, transfigured by an ethereal light. The artist manages to capture and enhance the essence of this iconic architecture, transforming a familiar urban landscape into a timeless and fantastic vision.
Presentation
“Coming from an art school that forged its loyalty to academic values, Jacques Guillet, with five decades of pictorial experience, draws his inspiration from the varied hues of his palette. The years spent in Provence imbue his works with a captivating light.
Originally from Vendée, passionate about architecture and lover of the sea, he breathes a realistic and authentic presence into these themes in his paintings, while transcending the colorful reality. At times, he frees himself from this temporal rigor, while preserving his favorite subjects. He places them with elegance and simplicity on the canvas, abandoning the faithful representation for a refined interpretation.
Freed from accuracy when it becomes time-consuming, he remains faithful to his favorite themes. His creations not only depict existing landscapes and monuments, but also express a desire to escape, giving birth to Landscapes of Elsewhere, fruits of his imagination, imbued with a revealing minimalism. An unsuspected source of pleasure for the artist. »

"I trace my path in continuity. Over the years, even decades, I discover and re-define my artistic path. Evolving is not denying the past, it is moving forward with confidence, improving, and daring to simplify because mastery of complexity is acquired."
