Description
This artwork vividly encapsulates a group of faceless figures in a casual assembly, seated in an informal setting. Each figure is intricately portrayed with varied postures and distinct clothing, suggesting individuality amidst anonymity. The palette incorporates earth tones with vibrant splashes, masterfully blending textures that create depth and movement. The background displays lush greenery and architectural elements, grounding the scene in a natural yet domesticated environment. Notably, the absence of facial features invites viewers to focus on the emotions conveyed through body language and attire. This intentional ambiguity challenges the audience to explore themes of identity and human connection, making it a thought-provoking piece. The composition is harmoniously balanced, drawing attention to each figure while maintaining a cohesive narrative. The artwork stands out for its unique approach to portraiture, blending abstraction with realism to evoke curiosity and engagement.
Presentation
Born in Beirut in 1952, Haibat Balaa Bawab received her BA in Fine Arts in 1975 from Beirut University College (now LAU) and has taught there for 17 years. From 2001 until 2022, she has been the Fine Arts Coordinator and instructor at the American University of Science and Technology (AUST).
This exhibition focuses on a series of Mixed Media Collages and Oil Paintings that reflect a range of current subjects, memories encountered in day-to-day life, which are reflections of topical issues and moments.
Haibat’s process in these Mixed Media Collages involves making papers from textures and motifs that she prepares using different media and techniques. They are multimedia in form, still dominated by Collage themes.
Haibat Balaa Bawab has had multiple solo exhibitions and has participated in several collective exhibitions in Lebanon, Grand Palais de Paris, and many Arab countries. In 2019, she was invited and participated in the 8th Biennale in Beijing. A monograph of her work entitled: "Haibat Balaa Bawab The Art of Collage" was published in 2012.
