Bernadette Van Baarsen   New & remarkable Artists

Large contemporary expressionist oil on cotton canvas of a sunset over a Provençal landscape by Dutch artist Bernadette Van Baarsen. Signed and dated to the bottom right and to the reverse and presented in a silver and black custom-made tray frame.

One of a new series of exciting, colourful, innovative and expressive works offering views of the landscape of Provence. Bernadette has taken and amplified the beautiful light in this wonderful part of the world breaking it down into its myriad components resulting in a daring explosion of colour on the canvas. The sun sets slowly over the olives and cypresses and imbues them with its warmth. Strong yet simple abstracted shapes allow the colour to reign.

This artwork is a bold exploration of abstract forms and vibrant colors. Dominated by angular shapes, the piece juxtaposes dynamic brushstrokes with a serene backdrop of warm yellows and soft oranges. A striking vertical form on the left introduces a sense of movement and flow, contrasting with the geometric shapes on the right. The central elements, resembling tilted rectangles, feature shades of green and blue with a subtle splash of orange, evoking a sense of depth and perspective. The sun, depicted in the top corner, casts a gentle glow, enhancing the warmth of the scene. The harmonious blend of colors and abstract shapes invites viewers to interpret the piece through personal reflection, highlighting the artist's innovative approach to form and color harmony. This composition is a testament to the power of abstract art in conveying emotion and energy.

Bernadette ('Berna', as she autographs her works) VAN BAARSEN was born and raised in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. After finishing her high-school she followed trainings to be a nurse and architect, whilst at the same time being a lead singer in two Dutch punk bands and making sculptures in plexiglass. Later in life she decided to pursue an academic career and obtained a PhD in psychology and medical ethics. She worked as associate professor at the Free University of Amsterdam and was member of several high-level medical-ethical committees. In 2015 she settled in France. Being essentially autodidact, she took up painting, in particular after being inspired by the Provençal landscape and friendships with fellow artists. In recent years she has shown her work at successful exhibitions in Provence.
