Description
Hand-sprayed original stencil work by NILS.RVA — one of five similar individually painted artworks.
36 layers on white gesso cradled painting wood panel.
This artwork is part of "The Amsterdam Cyclist", a 3-year project exploring the pragmatic beauty of cycling culture in the Dutch capital of Amsterdam. It consists of 50 paintings made out of around 500 intricate hand-cut stencils, showcasing NILS' masterful work.
"Zomermaid", a Dutch wordplay on "Zomer" and "Mermaid", shows a young lady fully embracing Amsterdam's summer vibe. Wearing a backless black-and-white mini dress and sporting sunglasses, she is cycling with her front crate full of colorful bouquets.
Each design from the series is hand-crafted, and though part of a limited edition of 5, every piece is unique due to slight variations in the paint process and color layering inherent to the stencil technique. Once all 5 editions have been made, the original stencils will be retired, preventing any future reproductions.
The original stencils are displayed in the pictures to give an idea of the detail of the work and are not included in the sale. There is an option to add the signed book to your purchase – contact us to discuss the details.
Presentation
Nils Westergard (NILS.RVA) is a Belgian-American street artist and filmmaker based in Amsterdam. His works explore themes of intimacy, strength, and vulnerability. Starting with graffiti in Washington, DC, he honed his skills painting tunnels, bridges, and stage sets. His hand-cut stencil work laid the foundation for his studio practice. After studying film at Virginia Commonwealth University, he embarked on a journey to paint a different European city every week for 6 months, establishing himself in the street-art world. Today, his focus ranges from global subjects to intimate portraits, seen on walls worldwide and in galleries featuring his immensely detailed stencil work. Nils has exhibited with Amsterdam Street Art (ASA), Go Gallery, and is part of the collections of STRAAT Museum (Amsterdam) and Urban Nation (Berlin).
