Description
In this work entitled Bibliotheque poetique, Sophie Dumont aptly continues her sensitive exploration of cultural memory through the refined form of the library. The oil on canvas, with a vertical format of 50 x 61 cm, offers a rhythmic composition, both structured and vibrant, where each book slice becomes a chromatic imprint of a silent narrative.
The painting's strength lies in its ability to suggest the passing of time without ever freezing the moment. The thick, intricate layers—typical of the artist's technique—translate the weight of history, the density of knowledge, and the delicate wear of the reading gesture. Ochres, pale blues, off-whites, and deep blacks follow one another in nuanced harmony, evoking both the materiality of books and their symbolic significance.
Far from any literal illustration, Sophie Dumont invites us here to contemplate what one might call an "architecture of silence," where each color becomes a word, each verticality a fragment of a narrative. The gaze circulates from row to row, as in a forgotten library where one rediscovers beloved volumes. One senses a dialogue between Morandi's works, for the restraint of tones, and the more contemporary aesthetics of European abstract painting.
With this evocative title, the artist breathes an almost metaphysical dimension into his work: ink is no longer just matter, but a metaphor for a thought that slowly and deeply imprints itself on the fabric of the world. A work that is both contemplative and warm, and will resonate particularly with art lovers who are sensitive to literature, traces, and memory.
Presentation
Born in 1964 in Suresnes, near Paris, Sophie Dumont lives and works in Langrune-sur-Mer, in Normandy. Self-taught, she began to paint in 1991 and develops research focused on matter, color, and the construction of space.
Her work unfolds in several series: libraries, abstract landscapes, studios, and geometric compositions gathered under the title Interior Architectures. These ensembles explore the relationships between memory, structure, and human presence. Books become rhythms and volumes; landscapes transform into expanses of color; studios retain the signs of activity and passage. In her geometric compositions, curves and rectangles organize a space where forms can evoke an architecture, an instrument, or a silhouette without fixing themselves in a single representation.
Sophie Dumont works mainly with oil on canvas, palette knife, and brush. The painting is built slowly, through successive layers, superimpositions, scrapes, and erasures. Earlier states remain perceptible and contribute to the depth of the work. The geometry of the compositions thus dialogues with a surface marked by gesture and time.
From one series to the next, her approach maintains this same tension between construction and matter, between what appears and what remains hidden. Her works are shown in France and internationally and are featured in private collections around the world.
