Description
This painting portrays a shirtless man in a leather jacket lighting a cigarette in a vivid, warmly colored living room. Behind him, a curved sofa scattered with brightly hued pillows and a framed abstract view of the Beirut skyline set the tone of the interior; eclectic and emotionally charged. The man's posture and expression suggest a moment of pause, yet the scene feels charged with the remnants of what might have just occurred. Whether it's the quiet after a romantic encounter, the calm following a moment of tension, or something more ambiguous, the painting leaves space for interpretation.
Presentation
Born in 2000 in Beirut and living between Beirut and Florence, Chammaa uses painting to explore his identity and origins. His figurative work, often set in minimalist landscapes, addresses themes of identity, queer intimacy, solitude, and time.
Raised in a strict religious environment against a backdrop of persistent instability in Lebanon, he developed a keen sense of difference and independence. Recurring elements such as male bodies, horses, mountains, and water constitute symbolic and emotional spaces conducive to reflection. Through layering colors and textures, he explores the tension between vulnerability and strength, allowing them to coexist within the same space.
