The oil painting on cardboard titled "City on the Water" invites viewers into a dreamlike urban landscape, where the architecture, light, and water flow together in a seamless, almost poetic harmony. With broad, confident brushstrokes and a palette rich in warm and cool tones, the artist captures the essence of a city built along canals, echoing the spirit of Venice while keeping the scene intentionally imaginative and fluid. The first element that captivates the viewer is the vibrant sky, a rich cyan expanse that deepens toward the top and lightens as it approaches the horizon. Dappled with gentle strokes of white and grey, the sky hosts a scattering of white birds gliding effortlessly through the air. These birds, painted with quick, elegant flicks of the brush, add movement and life, breaking the stillness of the vertical buildings and reflecting the openness above the narrow canal. The canal itself, occupying the lower half of the composition, reflects the surrounding structures with shimmering depth. The water, painted in deep blues with touches of orange and brown, mirrors the warm light that bathes the city. Highlights dance across the surface, suggesting either early morning or late afternoon light—golden, soft, and rich with atmosphere. The reflections are slightly distorted, capturing the natural rippling of water and enhancing the dreamlike quality of the painting. On either side of the canal rise tall buildings, their facades glowing in ochres, siennas, and creamy yellows. The structures are aged but elegant, their windows and doorways rendered with just enough detail to suggest use and history without rigid precision. Each building leans ever so slightly, as if shaped by time and the settling of foundations near the water. This subtle distortion contributes to the painting's organic rhythm, making the city feel alive and evolving. Architectural details are hinted at rather than defined—arched windows, shuttered balconies, and pointed rooftops emerge from layers of paint. Dark shadows contrast with golden highlights, adding depth and suggesting narrow alleyways and quiet entrances hidden from view. On the right, a cluster of green trees softens the edges of the buildings, their foliage painted with expressive dabs and swirls. The natural element contrasts with the man-made forms, enriching the scene with texture and warmth.
