Description
In Eternal Narcissus, John Black fuses the memento mori tradition with the mythological weight of self-adoration. A skull, its contours gilded with delicate gold leaf, emerges from the darkness crowned by white narcissus blooms—flowers whose name is forever tethered to the ancient Greek tale of the who fell in love with his own youth reflection.
Black poses a subtle yet unsettling question: when the gaze turns inward, is it an act of preservation or of decay?
The gold leaf suggests the seductive permanence of self-image, gleaming even as the bone beneath signifies inevitable dissolution. The narcissi, painted with the precision and luminosity of Old Masters, evokes the timelessness of beauty as celebrated in museum halls—yet here, beauty is inseparable from the specter of mortality.
Through this work, Black reframes self-love not as a fleeting vanity but as an eternal construct, one that transcends life and death alike. The image becomes both elegy and homage, a reminder that even in the museum's sanctified stillness, the painted faces of the past are only reflections of lives that have already ended.
