Pearls (2026) by Inga Makarova is a contemporary figurative diptych that combines classical references with a subtle yet provocative conceptual twist. Composed of two 60×60 cm panels, the work juxtaposes a cropped fragment of the female body adorned with a pearl chain and a reinterpretation of the iconic portrait associated with Girl with a Pearl Earring. This deliberate pairing creates a tension between tradition and reinterpretation, inviting the viewer into a dialogue between past and present.
At the core of the work lies a transformation of meaning. The pearl, historically linked to elegance, purity, and idealised femininity, is repositioned within a context that introduces irony and ambiguity. The body fragment becomes both aesthetic and confrontational, while the portrait on the opposite panel subtly shifts from passive observation to a more conscious, almost uneasy presence. This duality allows the painting to operate on multiple levels – visual, symbolic, and psychological – without imposing a single fixed interpretation.
The diptych structure plays a crucial role in shaping the viewer's experience. By separating the image into two distinct yet interconnected parts, the artist creates a space where meaning is formed through comparison and contrast. The refined oil technique, controlled palette, and careful rendering reinforce the connection to classical painting traditions, while the conceptual framework firmly situates the work within contemporary art discourse.
Pearls is particularly appealing for collectors interested in contemporary figurative painting that engages with art history, irony, and themes of perception and identity. Its balanced combination of visual clarity and conceptual depth makes it both accessible and intellectually engaging, suitable for a wide range of contemporary interiors and collections.

“To create something meaningful, something real, you should truly love what you do, as well as the way you do it, and always be passionate about it. For me art will never turn into a boring routine, as I truly enjoy transferring my thoughts and ideas into artworks." Inga Makarova
Inga Makarova is an award-winning Ukrainian painter, sculptor and draftsman. With a background in fashion and graphic design, she translates both worlds into her mixed media compositions. Inga is constantly experimenting with new themes, concepts, images, new combination of colours and forms. Lately, in addition to various sources of light (like neon or LED that are used directly in her artworks), she also started experimenting with various objects that are often quite far from art, for example sport jackets, tableware, cutlery, and even cigarette butts. Inga Makarova's desire to innovate, rather than imitate, allows her to turn even the most ordinary themes into something new, unique, and fresh, once it got reflected in her artworks.
