In (Switch), Elin Östberg places a heavy draught horse and a vintage tram side by side - two machines of urban movement from different centuries. The horse walks slowly in front of tram number 12, head lowered, occupying the same tracks that once marked its obsolescence. The pairing is matter-of-fact and quietly unsettling.

Östberg builds the composition from bold, flat planes of colour - deep navy, burnt red, warm ochre - that give the scene a theatrical stillness. Against this reduced backdrop, the horse is painted with careful naturalism, its weight and texture rendered in contrast to the graphic geometry surrounding it. The red rails run through the picture plane and out of frame, pulling the eye and suggesting continuity beyond the canvas.

The painting was created for at Galleri Scandinavia, Gothenburg - an exhibition centred on the city's historic M29 trams and their relationship to Gothenburg's urban identity.

Presentation

Elin Östberg is a Swedish self-taught artist based in Gothenburg, working in oil, gouache, and digital media. Active since 2015, she has built a devoted following – over 47,000 on Instagram – through a body of work that is immediately recognisable: the blue trams of Gothenburg, rendered with a dreamy, poetic sensibility that turns the everyday into something quietly extraordinary.

To Östberg, the tram is more than a motif. It is a shared space – a moving room where people from every corner of the city briefly inhabit the same world. Her paintings capture the intervals between destinations: the moment before arrival, the window light, the quiet of a platform. In her words, the tram represents safety, a space always somewhere in the city, ready to bring you home.

In recent years her practice has expanded to include large-format oil paintings that place horses alongside Gothenburg's trams, merging two of her strongest visual languages into something new. Her work is held in private collections across Scandinavia and beyond, and she is represented by Galleri Scandinavia in Gothenburg.
