Description

The strength to continue. The dignity of daily work. A connection to the land that endures beyond the outcome of a harvest.

Created in 2007, Spirit Of Buffalo explores the buffalo as a symbol of rural perseverance. For Indonesian artist Agus Zimo, its figure reflects agricultural communities whose lives follow the rhythms of cultivation, tending and harvesting, whether in paddy fields or on dry farmland.

The artist's statement centres on people who work with determination despite uncertain economic returns. A harvest may bring reward or financial loss, yet daily life continues to hold moments of happiness and meaning. Their labour belongs to a wider cultural cycle, sustained by repeated gestures, shared responsibilities and an enduring relationship with the land.

Zimo describes this continuity as a cultural wheel that must remain on its tracks. Through the buffalo, he gives form to the energy that carries it forward: patient strength, acceptance and the will to continue.

Spirit Of Buffalo invites reflection on the value of work beyond financial measurement. It honours the persistence through which rural communities sustain both their livelihoods and their way of life.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Agus Zimo was born on 22 July 1978 and is based in Langkaplancar, Pangandaran, West Java, Indonesia. He holds a Bachelor of Education (S.P.d.) in Fine Arts from Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI), Bandung, and founded Dapur Seni Agus Zimo in 2013.

His practice connects independent artistic expression with questions of justice, community and the environment. He considers an artwork a dialogue with the outside world, giving visual form to convictions while welcoming different interpretations.

Presentation

Agus Zimo creates paintings that invite curiosity and awaken awareness. Born in Indonesia in 1978, he lives and works in Langkaplancar, Pangandaran, West Java. He studied Fine Arts at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia in Bandung and established Dapur Seni Agus Zimo in 2013.

At the heart of his practice lies a conviction: art gives form to what deserves to be heard. Questions of justice, environmental protection and freedom of expression enter his work through narratives that connect personal experience with collective concerns. He welcomes the unexpected, seeing unconventional imagery as a way to reveal truths that ordinary appearances may conceal.

Working in mixed media on canvas, including acrylic and Aqua Proof, Zimo approaches painting as an open conversation. His subjects encourage viewers to reconsider their relationship with nature, society and one another. In , a celebration of woodland beauty becomes an invitation to preserve the living world upon which we depend.

His exhibition history spans two decades, with solo presentations in Bandung and participation in group exhibitions at venues including Selasar Sunaryo Art Space, Indonesia's National Gallery, ISA Art Gallery and Grey Gallery.

His paintings offer a meeting place for imagination and conviction, where visual pleasure opens toward a deeper engagement with the world.
