The Red City of a Non-Existent Past, 2025

Natalia Koval

The large red buildings dominating the canvas are monuments to ideas and places that feel real, even if they never existed in the physical world. Their rich red hue reflects the intensity and persistency of these imaginary memories in my “stream of consciousness."
The bright windows, flickering sporadically in the darkness of the walls, are metaphorical fragments of memory. These are moments of clarity, of understanding events, when the mind begins to archive its most secret corners.
The soft, blurred background of the sky in pink and orange tones creates a sense of eternity and timelessness. The earth, rendered in shades of gray and purple, is a dark layer of memories upon which our personality is founded.
The two small figures at the foot of the gigantic walls are us, the observers. We are trying to find our place amidst this majestic architecture of the mind, where every stone is a memory or a dream.
This work is about the attempt to hold on to what never was and to give form to the emptiness that imagination fills.
