Description
This portrait depicts a young man sitting against a deep blue background, which envelops the scene in an atmosphere of calm and contemplation. His body remains motionless, his hands clasped in his lap, whilst his gaze is directed slightly beyond the frame, as if he were lost in thought or engrossed in a conversation continuing beyond the picture.
The composition combines everyday elements – such as the bookshelf at the side – with a strong psychological presence. The books hint at an inner world shaped by learning, memory or imagination, whilst his reserved demeanour conveys a blend of self-reflection and sensitivity.
The colour scheme moves away from naturalism to explore an emotional dimension. The greenish and pinkish hues that wash over the face lend it expressive depth and reveal a complex identity.
Presentation
Mara Blanco Baumann 1994
Portraits that emerge from real-life encounters. I paint from life and see the portrait as an act of attentiveness. Through time, conversation and observation, a space is created in which people become visible beyond their roles.
I am not interested in outward resemblance, but in a person's emotional presence. Colour becomes a language that reveals vulnerability, strength and humanity.
In an age of fleeting images, these portraits invite us to look more slowly. What remains is the emotional trace of an authentic encounter.
“I understand the portrait as an ethical and profoundly human act."
