Description
This portrait emerged from a conversation we had together in my studio. As with all my artistic work, the process of painting began long before the first brushstroke: with the time I spent sitting opposite another person – without haste and without the need to play a role.
I am not interested in creating an idealised image or faithfully reproducing an outward appearance. I seek what emerges when the pose disappears and only the presence remains. The gaze, the stillness of the hands and the restrained tension of the body speak more of an inner state than of an identity.
The floral elements of the dress lend the image a delicacy that contrasts with the figure's frontal pose and the unfinished background. This interplay of vulnerability and steadfastness reflects the complexity with which I understand people: never as a fixed image.
Presentation
Mara Blanco Baumann 1994
Portraits that emerge from real-life encounters. I paint from life and see the portrait as an act of attentiveness. Through time, conversation and observation, a space is created in which people become visible beyond their roles.
I am not interested in outward resemblance, but in a person's emotional presence. Colour becomes a language that reveals vulnerability, strength and humanity.
In an age of fleeting images, these portraits invite us to look more slowly. What remains is the emotional trace of an authentic encounter.
“I understand the portrait as an ethical and profoundly human act."
