Mixed media and paper relief assemblage on panel
is an exploration of structural tension, spatial depth, and tectonic balance. Rooted in the visual vocabulary of Constructivism and architectural abstraction, the work blurs the boundary between two-dimensional painting and low-relief sculpture.
Through a sequence of precisely cut, overlapping planes, the composition breaks away from a flat surface to engage directly with physical space, casting subtle, shifting shadows that alter with the viewer's perspective. The dialogue between cool, chalky neutrals and the dense, textural pillar of saturated red forms a powerful chromatic anchor. Within this vibrant vertical axis, organic patterns contrast sharply with the rigid discipline of surrounding planes, suggesting a dialogue between vulnerability and resilience.
A sharp, dynamic ochre-yellow line cuts across the composition, acting as both an incision and a connector—threading through levels of relief and disrupting the geometric silence. The work balances restraint with expressive material presence, inviting contemplation on boundaries, permanence, and the quiet persistence of structure under tension.

Presentation
Born in 1964 in Benalmádena (Málaga), José María Fernández Doña (professionally known as J. Doña) is a contemporary Spanish painter, sculptor, and educator based in Andalusia.
His multifaceted practice explores the intersections of easel painting, sculpture, and mixed-media works, distinguished by rich textural experimentation, tactile materiality, and a refined balance between abstract and semi-abstract visual languages. Alongside his active studio practice, Doña has been deeply committed to arts education, serving as an professor of drawing and painting at the Centro Cultural Pablo Ruiz Picasso in Torremolinos since 1997.
Over his extensive career, he has participated in more than 150 solo and collective exhibitions across Spain and internationally, earning recognition through numerous art awards, critical selections, and inclusion in private and institutional collections.
