ABOUT THE ARTWORK
The Sacred Time of Our Breakfast belongs to the series, where memory is shaped not by grand events, but by intimate rituals that quietly structure emotional life. In this work, breakfast becomes more than a domestic scene: it is transformed into a protected space of closeness, where tenderness, nourishment, and mutual care take on an almost devotional quality.
What gives the painting its force is the way love is made visible through gesture rather than drama. The intertwined figures create a sense of enclosure and trust, while the flowers and shared table anchor the scene in the language of everyday life. Within the logic of , the work reflects on how memory preserves certain moments as sacred — not because they are extraordinary, but because they hold the rare experience of safety, intimacy, and being fully with another.
Madeleine series
In the Madeleine series, Daria Pogodina turns to the phenomenon of involuntary memory, known in psychology and culture as the “Proust effect." The artist explores how ordinary objects and sensory impressions from the past are transformed into emotional anchors—inner pillars of the self.
The objects and images chosen by the author—such as a mother's sweater, childhood food, or the voice of a television announcer—become points of access to the unconscious resources of the psyche, places of comfort and stabilization. Without falling into nostalgic idealization, Pogodina captures the subtle mechanism of interaction between the conscious and the unconscious, where the mundane becomes sacred, and seemingly banal details acquire profound meaning.
These works are not about escaping the present into the past, but about seeking inner light and strength in both personal and collective experience—a testament to the human ability to find resilience in the everyday during times of crisis.
Presentation
Dasha Pogodina is an experienced Ukrainian artist based in Switzerland whose paintings have been exhibited in Ukraine, Slovenia and Switzerland.
She describes her distinctive figurative works as being about the "here and now" and celebrating the moving moment. Having been forced to flee her country twice due to war, she finds solace and strength in the works of renowned impressionist, Claude Monet.
Pogodina most often creates with oils on canvas.
