Description
1 - Description of the work
"Embrace of the sunset" composed, in the center of a coarse burlap canvas, presents a twilight landscape of immediate legibility. In the sky, horizontal bands of salmon, terracotta, and pearl gray overlap, crossed by large white arabesques traced in a single gesture, like cloud volutes or aerial writing. Lower down, the horizon is tinged with pink and mauve. Against this declining light are silhouetted shapes of black and slate gray trees: umbrella pines, slender trunks, and, on the right, a large tormented pine whose branches twist towards the sky. At the foot of the composition, a pink run-off escapes the painted block, like a path or a reflection. In the dark mass of the foreground, the reading is obscured: bluish-gray shapes, lighter than the black that carries them, stand between the trunks like phantom silhouettes. One believes to discern bodies, faces turned towards the sunset, which disappear as soon as one tries to fix them. All around, the bare burlap allows the scene to float on the fiber, like a vision rather than a window open to the world.
2 - Critical analysis
At the heart of Contrasts & Dualities, the work explores the zone of balance between shadow and light, but also between the visible and the invisible. The contrast there is a reconciliation: • Silhouette vs light: the opaque trees do not obstruct the horizon; they reveal its intensity through cutting. • Presence vs absence: in the gloom of the bottom, figures surface without ever declaring themselves: the landscape doubles with a silent assembly. • Motif vs support: the reserve of burlap makes the scene a circumscribed apparition, suspended in the space of the canvas. "Embrace of the sunset" does not describe an evening: it restitutes the sensation, that hour when the visible diminishes and what accompanies us without showing becomes almost perceptible.
3 - Artistic and spiritual perspective
3.1 - In the work of GABAN The work takes place in the meditation on the light that crosses Contrasts & Dualities, alongside Threshold of azure, turned towards immensity, and Inner Dawn, which proposes its synthesis. Through the figures divined in the foreground, it also responds to Anthropogenesis: there, figures are born from matter; here, they watch. It finally finds a counterpoint in Incandescence of horizon, where the sunset ignites into abstraction.
3.2 - Artistic parentage
The silhouettes of trees cut out on a declining sky are inscribed in the tradition of contemplative landscape, where nature in the evening becomes a space for meditation. The treatment of the pines, between tache and calligraphy, also evokes Oriental ink painting, where a few dark masses are enough to make a landscape exist; this economy of means is transposed here into a warm and colored material.
3.3 - Spiritual resonance:
In ancient Egypt, the West, where the sun sets, was the land of the dead: every evening, the star entered their world and traversed it during the twelve hours of the night before being reborn at dawn. The canvas carries an intuition shared by many cultures: those who preceded us do not quite depart; they remain by our side, discreetly, like these silhouettes standing in the gloom. The embrace of the title then becomes twofold—that of the day that envelops the world one last time, that of the invisible presences that accompany us daily.
4 - Strengths of the work — Conclusion
An immediately legible landscape, which doubles with a more secret reading for those who take the time to look. A subtle twilight palette—salmon, mauve, pearl gray—enhanced by the cutting of the blacks. A raw burlap left visible, which confers upon the scene the presence of an apparition. A work of reconciliation between the visible and the invisible, at the heart of Contrasts & Dualities.

a breath that is no longer stifled. A vibration that imposes its necessity. Painter of pure emotion and living matter, GABAN emerges late, but with the certainty of being, finally, where everything converges.
Descended from a lineage of artists – grandson of Maxime Pierre André Verdier, painter and professor at the Beaux-Arts, and son of Michel Verdier, pathologist and leatherworker – GABAN carries in his veins the memory of gestures, the rigor of the gaze, and the freedom of pigments. But it is outside the academies that his work takes shape. A few courses, quickly abandoned. The essential is elsewhere: in the clash of colors, the visceral drive of the gesture, the tension between surface and depth. Never copy reality. Pierce it. Feel it. Invent it. With GABAN, emotion prevails over figuration, texture over line. His studios, in Paris and Aix-en-Provence, are sanctuaries. On one side a setting built for her by her partner, where the silent metamorphosis of an demanding and exposed Parisian life takes place, towards an inner fertility. There, the Ithaque house park unfolds its infinite palette of greens, ochres, wet shadows. Nature is not a source of inspiration: it is a matrix, a partner, a living double. On the other, his Parisian studio where the reflections of the sun on the Parisian rooftops are as many mirrors of souls, fertile ground for his creations. GABAN, a name chosen with poise by a woman who fully embraces herself but refuses assignments. Ambition is not gendered: to become a great artist, to sell his works during his lifetime, to exist in matter and in the market. That the art history is predominantly masculine is not a constraint, it is a field to reinvent. Appearing in painting in 2013 in a moment of assumed fracture with conventions and self-censorship, GABAN enters creation by breaking through. His period “EMERGENCE" (2013-2017) is dense, mineral, tumultuous. The canvases bear the stigmas of excess, of inner chaos, of flaws as much as of the will to extract oneself. The material is raw, sometimes black, incised, like scorched earth still smoking. Since 2025, a new era is taking hold: the period “CONVERGENCE", oriented towards calming, acceptance, openness. The colors broaden, the forms breathe, the gestures lighten without ever losing intensity. GABAN no longer seeks: GABAN is. And each canvas says it with elegance and power. GABAN does not paint to adorn, but to speak. To speak the dazzling beauty of the living, the subterranean struggles of the soul, and that quest for an always unstable balance between demand, freedom, and humanity.
