Divine harmony, Circa 2022

Azhar Mehmood

In "Divine harmony", Azhar Mehmood creates a richly articulated encounter between Arabic calligraphy and ornamental composition.

Ivory lettering unfolds across the centre, its sweeping curves standing out against deep red and dark surrounding passages. Smaller inscriptions gather within and around these larger forms, inviting the viewer to move between the expressive shape of the letters and the intricacy of their setting.

A circular medallion occupies the upper area. Concentric bands of calligraphy and geometric ornament surround a green floral centre, creating a focal point with a carefully ordered rhythm. Nearby, angled panels introduce strong diagonals that connect the circular structure with the flowing forms below.

The palette brings together red, gold tones, green, black and ivory. Warm golden passages open the upper field, while the red background gives the central lettering intensity. Smaller green medallions provide additional points of focus throughout the composition.

Visible surface texture adds depth to the colour and ornament. At close range, fine inscriptions and irregular painted passages reveal further layers of visual detail.

For Mehmood, the work celebrates faith, spirituality and the enduring beauty of Islamic cultural heritage. Through the interaction of lettering, geometry and ornament, invites a sustained, contemplative encounter.
