In "The geometry of devotion", Azhar Mehmood creates a richly layered encounter between flowing Arabic calligraphy and carefully organised ornament.

Large ivory forms establish the painting’s principal movement. Their curves unfold across a deep red field, gathering the surrounding details into a continuous visual rhythm.

The composition offers several points of discovery. A green-centred medallion occupies the upper left, enclosed by dark and gold-coloured borders. Lower down, another circular structure gathers inscriptions around a geometric rosette, introducing a different scale of detail.

Straight-edged bands enter diagonally from the lower right. Their nested outlines and smaller inscriptions create an architectural counterpoint to the sweeping lettering.

Throughout the work, curling motifs and compact written forms fill the spaces between these larger elements. The eye moves between broad shapes and delicate marks, discovering connections that become clearer through sustained looking.

The palette gives these relationships intensity. Crimson brings warmth, ivory opens luminous passages, and deep green provides quieter areas within the dense ornament. Black contours and gold-coloured accents articulate the transitions.

The painting presents calligraphy as a meeting of expression, cultural memory and visual structure. Its square format holds these varied movements within a unified field.
