Description
Sicario, 2019 by Manuel Santelices One of a kind, acrylic on vintage wallpaper Signed by the artist. Image size: 12 in. H x 16 in. W Unframed
This artwork features a striking juxtaposition of elements against a rich, coral-red background. At the center, a small, rustic house with illuminated windows suggests warmth amidst solitude. The dwelling is set against a backdrop of oversized, lush magnolia blossoms, their pale petals and verdant leaves creating a vivid contrast with the backdrop. A solitary figure in dark attire stands beside the house, holding a book, adding a narrative depth to the scene. This composition skillfully merges realism with whimsy, juxtaposing life-sized elements and miniature scenes to evoke a sense of reflection and nostalgia. The piece captures a balance of isolation and beauty, with its vibrant color palette and intricate details inviting viewers to explore the storytelling beneath its surface. This unique interplay between scale and theme distinguishes the work, engaging the viewer in a dialogue between nature and the human experience.
Presentation
The worlds of fashion, society and pop culture are explored through the illustrations of Manuel Santelices, a Chilean artist and journalist living and working in New York for the last 20 years. After writing stories about style, design, art and politics for a number of magazines, including the Spanish editions of Elle, Harper's Bazaar and Esquire, and being fashion writer in New York for Vogue Mexico and Latin American for 7 years, Manuel decided to focus his attention to illustration, painting mostly with watercolors the same characters and events he covered as a journalist.
