Description

This arresting piece of artwork captures the viewer's attention with its intense abstract composition and bold use of contrasts. Dominated by a central circular motif, the piece elicits an immediate visceral response with its dark, almost brooding color palette juxtaposed against flashes of ethereal light tones. At the heart of the artwork lies a radial configuration, reminiscent of a wheel or a sunburst, rendered in dense strokes of black. This central figure seems to carve out negative space with an almost tangible force, drawing the eye inward and anchoring the composition. Surrounding this dynamic nucleus, a halo-like aura of smoky whites and warm grays intensifies the contrast, creating a luminous effect that suggests both erosion and emergence. This interplay of light and shadow exemplifies a mastery of chiaroscuro, lending the piece an atmospheric depth that is both elusive and profound. The texture within this artwork is another layer of intrigue, with the central dark elements giving off an almost tactile quality, as if they are the scorched remnants of a sudden burst of energy. This evokes a sense of decay and rebirth, a powerful narrative of entropy and creation that is subtly underscored by the irregular periphery of the forms. The composition is meticulously balanced yet simultaneously chaotic, encapsulating a duality that is mesmerizing. The outer gradients blend outwards into softer, more diffused edges, suggesting a continuum or an expansion beyond the frame. This vast, cosmic feel imbues the piece with a sense of the infinite, of cycles that surpass human comprehension. In summation, this piece is a hauntingly beautiful exploration of light, dark, texture, and form. It compels the observer to ponder themes of destruction and renewal while showcasing an exceptional command of visual elements. This artwork, with its stark contrasts and evocative symbolism, stands as a potent testament to the transformative power of abstract art.

Presentation

My name is Michael R. Grine and I am an process oriented artist. I use a combination of found objects, acrylic paints, and aerosol paints to create abstract patterns on wood and canvas.

Statement

Curiosity. Emotion. Experimentation. Exploration. Leap of faith. Pursuit of knowledge. These words only begin to describe what my art signifies or represents. I was born an artist and have always identified myself as an artist. I possess an insatiable creative drive to make art out of the images I see in my mind. To help satisfy this impulse, I am always exploring new places and trying new things. Having freedom of expression and not being limited to one style or technique of making art are paramount to my identity as an artist. I love the many different processes of making art and experimenting with new ways of creating art.

My inspiration stems from color, music, literature, and the excitement about the unknown possibilities of taking everyday objects and using them in a way that differs from what the manufacturer intended. I use a combination of found objects, acrylic paints, and aerosol paints to create abstract patterns on wood and canvas. Some of my methods include combining different chemicals and paint on paper or in plastic or wood box frames to distort vivid colors that are mixed or thrown right on the canvas. The result is the distortion of lines and contours, and layers of translucent or opaque paints on the canvas or in random patterns.
