Description
We are surrounded and overwhelmed by the face that pleases or should please. In advertisements, magazines, television, online and offline, it is ever present.
We live in a world of selfies, of faces that please the creator of the image, defining what they should or should look like.
On the other hand, "don't forget, remember" presents a different vision of the portrait.
The models are seated and photographed with a long exposure facing their reflection in a mirror. This is how the dynamics of the face are transformed into a more personal and profound “inner” portrait.
Thanks to this procedure, faces become deformed and stop trying to please. On the contrary, they become almost transparent, open, vulnerable, a window on a more personal world.
The lived experience during the duration of the portrait is as if the poetic "I" were emerging from behind the external face; a lightened essence of the person and the "things" that inhabit him. It's as if we were looking inside the portrait, the model, where the fear, the pain, the pleasure, the love and the loss, and the memories are. This is where the fragility of the "inner self" lies beneath the surface, exposed and laid bare with the intention of creating a moment of reflection.
Presentation
Nicholas Winter attended his first photography class in secondary school before studying art & design and photography at Canterbury and Bournemouth colleges in England. The Fine Art Photographer produces silver photographs using darkroom techniques and processes. Nicholas Winter also manipulates Polaroids and creates photographic objects.
Based in Basel, Switzerland since 2002, Nicolas Winter's works have been shown in Europe and are part of private collections.
Fragility is a common thread in all of Nicholas Winter's artistic research.
The artist observes and examines things hidden from the surface at first glance. The photographer defines fragility by a "constant space": the space between reality and what could or should be. Within this brittle state, this layer, lies the potential to become aware of vulnerability, the impermanence of existence.
Through his photographic work, Nicholas Winter highlights the subtleties that make up our lives by clarifying the presence of fragility in our modern society.
