Description

Printed later 1977.

Signed, titled, and dated in ink on verso, "Leo Matiz, Arena de la Playa, 77" and stamped from the artist studio.

This artwork presents a mesmerizing photographic capture of desert sand dunes, distinguished by its intricate play of light and shadow. The image, centrally framed within an expansive white mat bordered by a sleek black frame, commands attention. The composition emphasizes natural patterns, with the sun casting sharp, contrasting shadows that outline the gentle, undulating ridges of the sand. The textures evoke a sense of movement, as if the viewer can feel the shifting grains beneath their gaze. The subtle gradation from light to dark across the dunes creates a dynamic rhythm, accentuating the vastness and solitude of the desert landscape. This piece is a striking representation of nature's artistry, compelling audiences to appreciate the intricate beauty in seemingly simple phenomena.

Leo Matiz summarized his artistic pursuits by saying: “I am a painter because of activism, photographer because of hunger, and crazy because of talent." Indeed, Matiz began his career as a caricaturist for political and literary publications, with a keen eye for the gesture, features, and scathing humor. These illustrations were particularly influenced by the work of Gustave Doré, George Grosz, Nadar, and Guadalupe Posada. He later began working as a photojournalist in Mexico for a number of international publications but began to use the medium to explore more artistic themes. His keenness for caricature served him well in his photographic portraiture, for which he is best recognized today. Matiz's subjects included Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, José Clemente Orozco, Marc Chagall, and Pablo Neruda.
