Matthieu Chazal is an independent French photographer. For several years, he has been traveling through Eastern Europe, the Black Sea, the Mediterranean and the Middle East to meet a constellation of geographical, cultural and historical regions. He has composed a series of Chronicles (from Iraq, Iran, the Caucasus, Ukraine, etc.) distinguished by several prizes and grants: CNAP and ADAGP grants, the Friends of the Albert Kahn Museum prize, the W. Eugene Smith Fund (finalist), etc. His book "Levant" was published in 2024 by Odyssée editions.

Levant explores from East to West – from the Balkans to the Caucasus, from Ukraine to Iran, Iraq, Syria and beyond – the dilemmas of a vast region of cultural confluences and tensions where several theaters of war are taking place. Levant is composed of scenes of daily life, fields and wastelands, palaces and ruins, shimmering costumes and austere uniforms, padlocked borders and passes, dead ends, confines, horizons. At the height of men, Matthieu Chazal leaves room for the spontaneity of the characters who enter the frame, for the disparity of their feelings and passions. He captures on the fly trivial and modest adventures, almost-nothings that give the story a theatrical dimension.
