Description
"Clergue changes the level of perception of beaches. With a little sand, he creates a giant relief, he abolishes the barrier of names." Roland Barthe.
The image measures 26.8cm x 17.7cm on a 28.5cm x 28.5cm paper.
This photograph is number XXVIII of a legendary series by Lucien Clergue, "Language of the Sands".
In this series of photographs, Lucien Clergue photographs the sand and the various prints left by the wind or the waves. The result borders on abstraction and the diversion of the senses.
This shot suggests a forest in winter, or perhaps a series of hills. But these are only the imprints of the surf on a sandy beach.
Thanks to this work, presented without any accompanying text, Lucien Clergue obtained his doctorate in photography in 1979. Roland Barthes, who was part of the jury, subsequently wrote an admiring text on Lucien Clergue.
