Description
Philippe de Champaigne (1602-1674)
Born in Brussels to a poor family, he began his apprenticeship as a painter at the age of twelve and moved to Paris in 1621. He stayed there for six years, returned to Brussels, then came back to Paris to paint Cardinal Richelieu. Philippe never traveled between Paris and Brussels by plane.
The Last Supper before the Apocalypse
2023 (1652) – Aerosol on canvas.
An earlier version is held at the Louvre. Christ announces that he will move heaven and earth, then sabotages his Last Supper with a bomb. This painting by Champaigne is the only known evidence of the Son of God's involvement in the Uprisings of the Earth.
Presentation
The digital brush and the bold pixel are Olivier Dupont Delestraint's tools for transforming the paintings he photographs during his travels. He then writes the true story of fake paintings created, in their time, by real artists. He teases our fetishistic relationship with masterpieces, challenges the power of the label; he plays on a very contemporary question: what constitutes authority?
