Description
Antoine Vestier (1740-1824)
Count Chastellux allowed him to leave Avallon for Paris. Antoine traveled to England and the Netherlands. His talent as a family portraitist was highly regarded. He became a painter to the king in 1786 and spent three years at the Louvre, where he was a neighbor of Jacques-Louis David.
The Marquis de Bigoudis presenting his invention
2022 (1788) – Oil on canvas and hair pixel. A slightly different version is held at the Dijon Museum of Fine Arts. JL David introduced him to the Marquis at the home of Hippolyte Ratteau, their wigmaker. Antoine quickly offered to immortalize him with his invention, which would change the lives of so many people over the next two centuries. The Marquis died on his Breton estate, not far from Pont-l'Abbé. This region now bears his name, but no one remembers it.
Presentation
The digital brush and the bold pixel are Olivier Dupont Delestraint's tools for transforming the paintings he photographs during his travels. He then writes the true story of fake paintings created, in their time, by real artists. He teases our fetishistic relationship with masterpieces, challenges the power of the label; he plays on a very contemporary question: what constitutes authority?
