Warp and Leap diptych, 2025

Ricky Cohete   Emerging artists

This striking diptych captivates with its powerful depiction of the human form. The black-and-white photography emphasizes the contrast and shadow, accentuating the muscular definition and graceful pose of the figure perched on a pedestal. In the left image, the figure is tightly curled, showcasing a balance of strength and vulnerability. In the right image, a dynamic expansion occurs as the figure arches forward, embodying poise and motion. The stark backgrounds and the symmetry of the two canvases enhance the minimalist aesthetic, drawing attention to the fluidity and tension within the poses. The use of monochrome not only highlights the sculptural elements of the body but also evokes timeless elegance. This artwork achieves a harmonious blend of stillness and energy, making it a compelling study of human anatomy and expression.

Through his exploration of bodily movement, with modern and ballet dancers, and with particular attention to the male physique, the artist has focused on the curves and lines of their anatomy. The expansion of the body, intertwined with light, and the infinity of movement, like an eternal dance. The harsh lights and shadows in the warm Florida weather led Ricky Rocket to explore photography. The sharp and refined effect of these types of lighting conditions became a necessity to avoid studio environments. Self-taught, while photographing ballet dancers in the city of Miami he began to devote more time to the male form. Working with them outside of their safe space (rehearsal studio) and taking them outside, on sand or water, creating a dynamic that kept giving birth to new compositions. Inspired by the mythology of tarot culture and astrology, he has incorporated some of these elements throughout his work.
