This compelling diptych presents two life-sized portraits that challenge conventional aesthetics and explore human vulnerability. The left panel features a male figure standing with a contemplative posture, his gaze directed upwards, suggesting introspection or longing. On the right, a female figure is depicted with an evocative transparency, showcasing an anatomical cross-section of the womb, artfully integrating elements of surrealism. The background is a soft, muted landscape, grounding the figures in an ethereal environment. The juxtaposition of the exposed interior alongside the visible exterior invites viewers to ponder themes of life, creation, and existential reflection. The use of chiaroscuro amplifies the drama, enhancing the figures’ three-dimensionality and emotional depth. This work is a thought-provoking examination of the human form, both mysterious and revealing, encouraging a deeper contemplation of identity and existence.
Presentation
Mauricio Velez was born and lives in Colombia. He was trained at the European Institute of Design in Italy. Since then, he has worked on a large number of projects in Latin America, the United States and Spain, offering, through his personal prism - images which he seeks to refine the sensitivity and perception of the viewer towards religious icons, art, and the human body.
His work confronts the viewer with a sense of aesthetics that balances between the spiritually inspired and the disturbed.
"In few photographers like Mauricio Velez does aesthetic become ethic. Every portrait scene is seamless. Every composition is an impeccable piece: the light, gesture, even the preference in models. Nothing can be discredited of the photographic style neither the clean technic. And for this aesthetic perfection, the message lends to the viewer in its pure state."
