Navy blue

Indigo, azure, cyan, cobalt... there are dozens of shades of blue. This reassuring and calming colour - once derived from precious minerals - has always inspired artists. And this is no coincidence! Nature blesses us with the most beautiful blue landscapes, such as the sky and the ocean. Natural expanses are so fascinating that we often associate blue with infinity, freedom and confidence.

Associated with the monarchy for a time, blue triumphs from the 20th century onwards. Indeed, artists reinvented the use of colour, for example by renewing the dialogue between the three primary colours. Blue is seen as darkness as opposed to yellow, the light. This contrast is particularly visible in the work of Piet Mondrian, who reinterprets space with geometric colour planes.

The Modern era shook up the rules of representation. The perception of space changed and the use of blue multiplied. Some artists replace figurative elements by a flat area of colour. This is the case of Wassily Kandinsky who presents his patterns on a simple blue plane representing the sky. Marc Chagall also favoured this method. Blue holds an important place in his works on Biblical themes, because it is a colour that is associated with the divine, even the Virgin Mary. Without forgetting of course, the artist whose name is inseparable from the colour blue: Yves Klein. His electric blue hue, which has become iconic, has had an unparalleled impact in the world of art, fashion and design. Our artists S. Kristol or Henri Iglèsis continue his legacy by creating works in Klein's favourite colour.

Finally, this colour has well-known virtues, which make it a real ally in the decoration of your interior. If you need a little balance and softness, a painting in this colour will do wonders. A blue composition hung on your wall, whether it is a pastel shade or Yves Klein's electric blue, will inject some happiness into your space.

By the way, did you know that blue was voted Pantone colour of the year 2020? Indeed, for 20 years, experts from the Pantone Color Institute have been analysing film production, fashion, design, art, sport, travel... in short, all the different aspects of culture, to define the colour of the year. Indeed, colours are an integral part of the cultural habits, attitudes and emotions of an era. Let yourself be charmed by the Classic Blue of the year 2020, synonymous with peace and confidence.
