Description
The work we are contemplating is a vibrant and bold illustration, dominated by the name "Coppola" written in capital letters at the top, immediately capturing the viewer's attention. This piece is distinguished by its composition rich in colors and textures, merging abstract elements with touches of realism. The central element of this work is a stylized face, with features that are both mysterious and expressive. The face is fragmented into two distinct halves: one is dark, wrapped in complex and enigmatic patterns, inviting an interpretation on the duality and mystery of the personality; the other part is illuminated, in stark contrast with bright colors, especially reds and blues, emphasizing a theme perhaps of passion and vitality. The character's eyes, captivating and beautifully detailed, are a bright blue color, creating a powerful contrast with the dark skin and offering a surprising depth. The vibrant red of the lips adds a touch of sensuality and also draws the eye to the minute details of the face. Red flowers adorning the head and shoulders of the figure add a poetic and delicate dimension to the whole, while floral and geometric patterns dot the rest of the image, creating an intriguing harmony between natural elements and abstract forms. The background of the work is a sea of vibrant colors with touches of blue, red, and beige, evoking an imaginary landscape or a dreamlike scene. This color palette accentuates the dreamlike and surreal impression of the work. In short, this lithograph is a captivating fusion of styles and symbols, reflecting a harmonious marriage between chaos and beauty. It appeals to the imagination and pushes the viewer to contemplate the many stories hidden behind each brushstroke, each word and each symbol. A work that is both mysterious and beautifully executed, it celebrates the balance between dark and light, the abstract and the concrete.
Presentation
In the tradition of great production designers (Alexandre Trauner, Ken Adam), Dean Tavoularis has discreetly established himself in the history of cinema, leaving his mark on around thirty films, including almost the entire work of Francis F. Coppola.
Trained at Disney (Lady and the Tramp, Mary Poppins), this son of Greek immigrants, settled in California, took drawing and architecture classes, before materializing the plans of Arthur Penn (Bonnie and Clyde, Little Big Man) and Michelangelo Antonioni (Zabriskie Point). Each of his shoots requires long hours of location scouting and documentary research, his secret for defining the opaque atmosphere of The Godfather or the humidity of Apocalypse Now, the misty exteriors of Hammett by Wim Wenders or the coquettish interiors of Carnage, his last film, directed by Roman Polanski in 2011. Since then, in Paris where he lives with the actress Aurore Clément, Dean Tavoularis paints canvases which he exhibits alongside the storyboards of his brother Alex, the very ones which were used studying the settings of his films.
