Description

This captivating work of art is a prominent example of modernist sculpture, characterized by rigid geometric shapes and an arrangement of colorful blocks. The room, elegantly simple, uses a bold but restrained color palette: bright red, deep black, pure white, bright yellow, earthy brown and understated gray. The sculpture presents itself as a juxtaposition of rectangular and cubic shapes, creating a complex but balanced structure. Each block appears methodically positioned, forming a dynamic layering that inevitably catches the viewer's eye. The diversity of heights and alignments of the blocks produces an intriguing play of vertical and horizontal lines, giving the sculpture a sense of movement despite its static nature. The most remarkable aspect of this work is its masterful use of negative space. The gaps between the blocks become as significant as the blocks themselves, creating intervals that allow light to play around and through the sculpture. This adds an additional dimension to the work, transforming the room according to viewing angles and light variations. The work evokes a futuristic city in miniature, or an abstract architectural composition, captivating with its formal purity and aesthetic refinement. With a simple and functional wooden foot, the sculpture aims to be timeless and universal, evoking the very foundations of constructivism. It is a celebration of geometric rigor and coloristic simplicity, a centerpiece that provokes reflection and admiration.

Presentation

In the tradition of great production designers (Alexandre Trauner, Ken Adam), Dean Tavoularis has discreetly established himself in the history of cinema, leaving his mark on around thirty films, including almost the entire work of Francis F. Coppola.
Trained at Disney (Lady and the Tramp, Mary Poppins), this son of Greek immigrants, settled in California, took drawing and architecture classes, before materializing the plans of Arthur Penn (Bonnie and Clyde, Little Big Man) and Michelangelo Antonioni (Zabriskie Point). Each of his shoots requires long hours of location scouting and documentary research, his secret for defining the opaque atmosphere of The Godfather or the humidity of Apocalypse Now, the misty exteriors of Hammett by Wim Wenders or the coquettish interiors of Carnage, his last film, directed by Roman Polanski in 2011. Since then, in Paris where he lives with the actress Aurore Clément, Dean Tavoularis paints canvases which he exhibits alongside the storyboards of his brother Alex, the very ones which were used studying the settings of his films.
