Description

Hand signed and numbered. Edition of 90 prints.

This artwork presents a strikingly detailed and thought-provoking composition, evocative of a meticulous and deliberate architectural study. Rendered in a harmonious sepia tone, the piece employs precise lines and geometric forms to build a multi-layered visual narrative that invites contemplation. At first glance, the central area of the image is dominated by an array of household objects, carefully arranged in an orderly yet seemingly casual manner. This includes a traditional teapot, a delicate wine bottle, and an elegantly curved smoking pipe, each rendered with a high level of precision that suggests both functionality and aesthetic value. The backdrop features a sophisticated interplay of light and shadow, achieved through the use of sharp contrasts and gradients that add depth and dimension to the scene. The shadow patterns cast by the objects create a rhythmic interplay across the composition, enhancing the feeling of spatial depth and inviting the viewer to explore the interstitial spaces. The harder lines and edges of the surrounding architecture frame the still life in the center, suggesting a secluded, almost introspective space. This structural context imparts a sense of balance and stability to the work, juxtaposed against the delicate and ephemeral nature of the objects within. What sets this piece apart is its masterful blend of minimalism and complexity. The artist's restrained color palette, dominated by warm, inviting sepia tones, imbues the artwork with a subtle vintage charm, while the intricate detailing captures the viewer's attention and invites closer inspection. The careful balance between the literal representation of objects and the abstract geometric elements speaks to a deeper, underlying narrative about the intersections of everyday life and structured environments. Overall, this artwork is a testament to the artist's skill in combining architectural precision with everyday simplicity, creating a visually arresting tableau that is both serene and intellectually engaging.

Presentation

Jean-Michel Folon was born in 1934 and passed away in 2005. He was a Belgian painter and draftsman. He left Brussels in 1995 and moved to Paris after giving up on his architecture studies. He drew energetically for five years on a daily basis. The artist produced eclectic creations: watercolors, engravings, theater decors, illustrator of books for Kafka, Borges, Vian, Prévert…

"I simply tried to set my own dreams with the hope that others will join in along with theirs', claims Jean-Michel Folon.

He has illustrated several books and magazines in New York: Horizon, Esquire and The New Yorker. His first exhibition took place at the library " Le Palimugre " in Paris in 1964. Five years later, he was able to exhibit in New York and Japan in 1970. In 1975, he made history in television, by creating the ending credits of the program on channel 2. In 1990, he was extremely successful when he exhibited his watercolors and engravings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. In 2000, he opened the Folon foundation near Brussels. In 2004, he became the ambassador at UNICEF. A protean artist, he created the decor for "La Bohème", "Puccini", but also open air operas.
