Presentation

Robert Delaunay is a French painter born in 1985 in Paris, and died in 1941 in Montpellier. He left high school when he was 17, to join the studio of theater designer Eugène Ronsin. He learned painting besides his uncle, Charles Darmour, who took care of him since he was 9. In 1906, he participated at the XXI Salon of Independents, and started to frequent artists in search of a new art, such as Fernand Léger. Three years later, he met Sonia Stern, who became his wife some years later. Together, they form one of the most famous couples in the history of art. They are the main founders of the Orphist movement, a branch of Cubism and an important avant-garde movement of the beginning of the Twentieth century.

Robert Delaunay's theories about color made him famous. The artist seeks pictorial harmony permanently by doing a patient work of arrangement of colors on a canvas. An abstract painter, he is also known for his multiple representations of the Eiffel Tower, whose construction marked his childhood. This motif has followed all the artistic languages of the artist, Neo-Impressionist, Cubist, and finally his own simultaneous method.

Today, his pieces are part of collections in some of most important public Institutions in the world, such as those at the Center Pompidou, the Tate Modern, and the Guggenheim in New York.
