Overprint of three dies from a set of four. Woodblock print, Charbonnel inks on Simili Japon paper, mounted on plywood. 3 series of 24 copies, variable edition. American box frame in shellac varnished wood. Kaleidoscope Excavations Superimposition of three matrices from a set of four, by declining their order: ABC, ACB, BCD, BDA, CDA… We thus obtain 24 possible variations, which are sometimes distinguished just by the light on a few blades of grass. This approach is a metaphor for archaeological excavation: the discovery of the various details and elements, the need to make them readable, the choices to be made on what is put forward as a priority, underlying the danger of destroying part of the information collected. The matrices are freely inspired by four photographs taken in Buglose, near Dax in the Landes de Gascogne (40). Buglose was a camp erected by German troops in 1940, to confine soldiers from the French colonies. It was one of the many Frontstalags that the Germans had installed in France during World War II. Colonial prisoners of war were employed there in the construction of the Atlantic Wall and in the exploitation of the Landes forest. Subsequently, France in turn interned German prisoners of war from 1945 to 1948. The camp had been abandoned after the departure of the last German prisoners. Vegetation covered this forgotten area, until in 2009 the storm "Klaus" made reappear the vestiges, in particular of the foundations of huts of the "Adrian" type, buried under the dense vegetation of gorse and ferns.

Jana Lottenburger

Germany  • 1975

Emerging artists

She was born in 1975, in the former GDR, in the Berlin suburbs. With her parents, she migrated to West Berlin in early 1983, almost seven years before the fall of the wall. This first great movement between two totally different realities still pushes her today to take an interest in the multiple facets inherent in everything, and in parallel contexts.

His research feeds particularly on the observation of nature and the questioning of identity. The human being, his environment, the conception of landmarks and relationships, forgetting and memory, are for her a vast field of exploration.

On the gurative and narrative level, she uses a vocabulary of archetypes, notably from the domain of nature. It establishes inventories, botanical charts, bestiaries and records of all kinds in order to classify and structure the elements constituting a territory. From this material, she recomposes and creates visions of landscapes, plants, undergrowth, trees or animals. She offers often dreamlike universes, the reading of which suggests the meaning hidden between the lines and behind the obviousness of the images.

She topography the notions of uprooting, anchoring, time, and fragile balances, to explore the complex conditions of being in motion, to determine the essence of a contemporary identity and its metamorphoses.
