Description
This captivating artwork offers a bold exploration of contrast and form. At first glance, it features two main components: a polished copper surface, bright and reflective, juxtaposed with a blue, rough and mineral texture. The copper, with its golden hue and smooth surface, immediately catches the light, creating a striking visual effect. The blue element, cut into an irregular yet harmonious shape, evokes the texture of natural materials. This textured surface is interrupted by a sharp circular opening, adding a dimension of interaction with the surrounding space. The contrast between the metallic shine and the blue roughness creates an intriguing visual tension, while evoking a sense of complementarity between the natural and industrial elements. Assembling this piece on a subtle grey background allows the distinctive elements to stand out even more, while integrating the work into a modern and clean context. The work embodies a meticulous balance between the artificial shine of the metal and the organic depth of the blue texture, offering a visual experience that is both stimulating and calming. This work is a celebration of reconciled duality, where modernity and nature coexist harmoniously in a composition that is both simple and deeply thoughtful. It is an invitation to contemplate the contrasts and complementarities that define our daily visual environment.
Presentation
Philip Hearsey, born in 1946, is a renowned British sculptor living and working in Longtown, Herefordshire, UK. Hearsey received formal training at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, where he developed the foundations of his art. Before devoting himself fully to sculpture, he spent many years in the field of architecture and construction, which influenced his perception of forms and materials.
Hearsey specializes in sand casting, an ancient and direct method of creating bronze sculptures. Unlike the lost-wax technique widely used in art foundries, sand casting imposes simplicity of form and method. This process celebrates the raw, noble quality of bronze, creating solid, visually fascinating and often tactile works. Hearsey embraces the unique flaws and imperfections of each sculpture, seeing them as elements that add to their beauty and individuality.
Philip Hearsey prefers to keep the thought process behind each work private, leaving room for the viewer's personal interpretation. The titles of his sculptures are deliberately ambiguous, inviting each viewer to create their own understanding and connection with the work. Themes of erosion, nature and time play a crucial role in his work, reflecting his appreciation of natural processes and their impact on materials.
Hearsey uses a variety of methods to color and patinate its bronze sculptures. The most common method is to oxidize or patinate the bronze, using controlled chemical reactions to achieve varied and unique color effects. In addition to patinas, he sometimes applies transparent acrylic washes, oil washes or colored waxes to enrich the finish of his works. The combination of patinas and paints allows for a wider range of colors and a more vivid finish. All his colorations are protected by a marine-grade lacquer and/or wax, ensuring their durability and brilliance.
Philip Hearsey has exhibited his work throughout Britain, gaining recognition for his distinctive approach and technical expertise. Each sculpture is uniquely signed and numbered, underlining the individuality and originality of his work.
