Description
This fascinating artwork features a relief-sculpted face, composed of small wooden cubes assembled with exceptional precision. The varying shades of brown, pink, and green create a subtle gradient, bringing life and expression to the serene face with closed eyelids. The innovation lies in the use of cubic geometry to convey an organic texture and captivating depth. The seamless transition of colors evokes a balance between nature and humanity, symbolized by the green hue forming a crown. The choice of materials gives the piece a modern yet timeless quality, capturing the essence of the natural world while exploring the complexity of the human form. This work intrigues with its ability to blend architectural structure with emotional depth, creating a soothing and contemplative presence. The simple elegance and profound expression of this face make it a truly original and memorable piece.
Presentation
Born in Sydney, Australia, in 1959, raised in Southern France, Gil Bruvel started experimenting with art at age 9. His father, a cabinet maker acquainted Gil with wood sculpting and furniture design, Gil applied these skills to his functional art designs and sculptures years later. In 1974, Gil began his studies at an art restoration workshop in Chateaurenard, France, under M. Laurent de Montcassin, learning the techniques of Old and Modern Masters as well as art history of the 14th-20th century. Thereafter, he set up his studio in St. Remy de Provence until 1986 when he first made his way to the United States, making it his permanent residence in 1990.
