Sculpture Consciousness
"Consciousness can only exist in one way, and that is by being aware that it exists." Jean Paul Sartre

It invites us to reflect on the nature of consciousness and existence. When it says that "consciousness can only exist in one way," it means that consciousness is not a passive state; it requires active awareness of oneself and the environment. To be "conscious that one exists" implies that to be truly conscious, we must be able to reflect on our own existence, our thoughts, and our emotions. This suggests that self-awareness is fundamental to the human experience. In other words, it is not enough simply to exist; we must be conscious of our existence and how we interact with the world around us. Sartre, as an existentialist, also emphasizes the responsibility that comes with this consciousness. By being conscious, we are responsible for our choices and for giving meaning to our lives. So, in short, the phrase reminds us that consciousness is an active and reflective process, essential for understanding who we are and how we relate to the world.

Conscience is the presence of God in man. Victor Hugo

suggests that conscience, that inner voice that guides us in decision-making and helps us distinguish between good and evil, can be seen as a manifestation of the divine within us. Hugo seems to imply that each of us carries within us a spark of the sacred, a connection to something greater than ourselves. This idea can be interpreted as a reminder that our actions and thoughts are influenced by this divine presence, inviting us to reflect on our choices and their impact on the world. Furthermore, conscience can be seen as a beacon guiding us toward empathy, compassion, and justice—values that many spiritual and religious traditions consider fundamental. In this sense, the quote encourages us to listen to and honor that inner voice, recognizing that, in doing so, we are attuned to the divine that dwells within us.
