Description

With Petite Marnie, Valérie Hadida pursues a distinctive artistic quest: to portray childhood not as an idealized phase, but as a state of intense presence where vulnerability transforms into a form of strength. Her figure—one of what she affectionately calls her "little women"—embodies a solitude that is deeply inhabited, where every curve and shadow tells a story.

In this bronze sculpture, a young girl sits with her legs drawn up against her chest and her arms clasping her knees, as if protecting or cradling herself. There is no grand display; everything plays out through the economy of gesture, the body's focused intensity, and the silence of her gaze. Her posture is not one of submission but of survival—a way of holding together what might otherwise scatter.

Perhaps the most striking element is her hair. For Valérie Hadida, hair is never merely an attribute; it is a living, almost organic substance that seems to both absorb and reflect light. Here, it unfurls like a frozen storm, a thunderhead, or a cloud of memories. The strands—by turns dense and airy—evoke swirling thoughts, tangled emotions, and clinging fears. This hair is not a veil but a second skin, an extension of the figure's inner self.

The title *Petite Marnie* sheds light on the work's meaning. Marnie is the child of silences, the one who carries invisible worlds within her. She appears as the guardian of her own mysteries, a quiet sentinel of her own inner landscape. Her posture—at once withdrawn and open—suggests a state of listening; she has not turned inward by chance, but to better hear what flows through her.

The treatment of the material plays a vital role in conveying this emotion. The hand-worked bronze retains traces of the initial modeling. The surface is never smooth but vibrant, seemingly scored by the passage of time or the tremors of memory. This texture lends the sculpture a deeply human dimension, where the material's rough edges echo the rough edges of existence. The verdigris patina—Valérie Hadida's signature—adds a touch of timeless softness, as if the figure had always been there, poised between the eternal and the ephemeral.

Finally, despite its small scale (to be adjusted according to actual dimensions), *Petite Marnie* possesses a monumental presence. The narrow base elevates the figure without isolating her; she seems to float, suspended between earth and sky, as if she might take flight or collapse at any moment. Her bare feet, hovering slightly above the base, create a sense of lightness—almost weightlessness—while her face remains lost in a contemplation that eludes us.

Petite Marnie can thus be understood as a meditation on childhood, that period when everything is at once fragile and infinite. Valérie Hadida presents not merely a child, but a presence: that of a being who, by turning inward, finds the strength to stand tall. True to her artistic language, she favors suggested emotion over explicit narrative, leaving viewers free to project their own memories and silences into this quiet encounter.
