Description
A cat on a shoulder, the contact between the animal and the hand, the movement around the woman's head, all contribute here to the intimate. The character carries the cat and the vertical shapes on each other make one feel the weight on the hand, hand that seems to hold the animal. The cat wants to get down then the woman looks up, and the two meet. The ascending composition lifts the gaze up to the cat. The unity of the upper part is emphasized by a modeling that opposes the lower part treated in a broad and smooth movement. The character's second hand carries a bowl, which explains the cat's movement attracted by the presence of a meal. This work is an assemblage of forms dissociated by differences in textures and colors, notably the gray patina of the cat.
Presentation
After studying at the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he became an architect, then turned to monumental sculpture, composed with landscape and architecture. He thus responded to around thirty commissions in varied materials and expressions.
At the same time, he developed bronzes, often animal-based. His language sought a balance between precise anatomy, symbolic dimension, and restrained lyricism. The composition was based on precise drawing and proportions, which allowed for freedom and fantasy of gesture. In order to emphasize the eloquence of a movement, he created gaps, representing only a part of the subject.
Painting has taken on an important role in recent years. It reflects the dialogue between drawing, materials and architecture, between line, surface and volume. It composes empty or constructed spaces, inhabited by characters, as if staged.
His works oscillate between a secret and tender intimacy, and the often baroque lyricism of a grand theatricality. In a very personal drawing, we feel his ambition to simply express life.
2021 winner of the TAYLOR FOUNDATION, Joêl Dabin prize, numerous solo exhibitions.
